CPE gives seminar to urban poor leaders of district 4, Quezon City
On September 1, 2007, CPE gave a seminar on Empowering and Participatory Governance to 30 urban poor leaders who are partners of the Claretian Urban Poor Apostolate. .
The participants, mostly are representing urban poor associations that are now facing a threat of eviction and demolition once the Central Business Ditrict is started by the city government.
Edwin Chavez, Executive Director of CPE gave an overview on empowering and participatory governance. He clarified that governance is about power and power should emanate from the people. Wilson Requez also presented the different avenues for people’s participation such as local development councils, local development planning, local legislation, mandatory consultation, recall, legislative and referendum among others. Atty. Jae dela Cruz of Akbayan Legal Team also discussed the salient features of Katarungang Pambarangay.
The Claretian Urban Poor Apostolate (CUPA) is headed by Fr. Educ Apungan, CMF. CUPA holds a series of training and seminars for selected urban poor leaders on different themes and topics.
